Fishing Rods

Fishing rods, depending on your age you may have heard some old timers call it call a “fishing pole”. Here I will tell the difference between the two. A fishing pole is usually a long flexible stick with a string attached to end. Fishing poles have been recorded through out history as far back as the ancient Egypt.

Today a rod is a stand alone unit that does not have a string attached to the end of it. Now a day rods are made from man made material such as, graphite, or carbon fiber. You can still find Bamboo rods to day but are more geared to Fly fishing. Well whatever you end up calling it, to me a rod is the backbone to any trout fishing arsenal.

A trout rod today has more to it, like a place to mount a reel, guides for your line to slide through. With to days technology you can buy trout rods that can be broken down into multiple pieces for easy storage or to carry in a backpack. There are to types of rods that you want to key in on. They are the spin cast rod and the spinning rod. The difference in the two are that when hold a spin cast rod by th handle the guides will be on the top the rod shaft. The spinning rod when you hold handle will have the guides on bottom of the rod shaft. Each rod holds a different reel, which will be covered in the “Fishing Reels” page.

There is one fishing rod that I have used over last ten years, that has taken a beating and came back for more . It is the Shakespeare SPL 1100 7 foot medium action model, which is a inexpensive rod and a must for a new trout fishing rookie.
